Iranian Parliament Challenges President Ahmadinejad

The Iranian Parliament elected Ari Larijani as their new speaker on Wednesday. Mr. Larijani was a rival to Mr. Ahmadinejad in the presidential election of 2005. Mr. Larijani was elected as speaker in an unusually lopsided vote: 232 to 31.

Heads of state and representatives of over 40 Muslim nations gathered today in Dakar, Senegal for the Eleventh Session of the Islamic Summit Conference.

Opposition Barred in Iranian Election

As President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's approval plummets in Iran, his opposition is barred from running in the upcoming parliamentary elections held on March 14, 2008.

Candidates are vetted by the interior ministry before they are allowed to stand for election to the parliamentary. Out of the 7,000 hopeful candidates, nearly 3,000 have been disqualified.

Iranian President Loses Support

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad looks to be loosing support of clergy in Iran as the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, publicly intervened earlier this year to end a dispute between Mr Ahmadinejad and parliament over legislation for the gas sector.
