Iranian President Loses Support
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad looks to be loosing support of clergy in Iran as the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, publicly intervened earlier this year to end a dispute between Mr Ahmadinejad and parliament over legislation for the gas sector.
The intervention comes in midst of an economic recession and low approval ratings for the president. His critics site the change in priorities from distribution of wealth and fighting corruption during his campaigning two years prior and his agenda since taking office: nuclear proliferation and aggression towards Israel.
The public intervention by the supreme leader and head of the clergy may be the first step in ousting Ahmadinejad in an effort by the clergy to stave off a popular revolt.
