Egyptians Denied Marriage, Seek Comfort in Islam

Lack of economic prospects in Egypt lead to delay in marriage. Young men are expected to save enough money to pay for an apartment, furniture and a lavish wedding before they can get married. As youth employment approaches 30%, more and more young people are forced to delay marriage.

The article follows one young man who becomes depressed when his fiancee's parents cancel the engagement after two years. He and many of his friends find solace in Islam. NGOs and the government are sponsoring marriage in mass because they are concerned about the destabilizing effect of so many men and women who can not afford to marry.
