Iranian Parliament Challenges President Ahmadinejad

The Iranian Parliament elected Ari Larijani as their new speaker on Wednesday. Mr. Larijani was a rival to Mr. Ahmadinejad in the presidential election of 2005. Mr. Larijani was elected as speaker in an unusually lopsided vote: 232 to 31.
The difference in politics between the two men is not especially significant. Mr. Larijani is reputed with holding many of the same political views about nuclear development in Iran and is said to be close to the Ayatollah, the supreme religious leader in Iran. The overwhelming support for Mr. Larijani is most likely a reaction to increasing dissatisfaction of Mr. Ahmadinejad's economic policies and will probably hurt his chances for reelection in 2009.
