UN Official Praises Dubai Green Building Directives

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, recently spoke in Dubai Maritime City to urge continued focus on energy-efficient building and other climate-friendly investment. "I’d like to see the Middle East investing for the post-petroleum future," he said.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has issued directives mandating that all new buildings in Dubai should follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or similar principles. Dubai Maritime City’s Master Plan requires all developers obtain green building certification under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) or LEED. Dubai Maritime City is thought to be the only city in the world that applies such green building principles throughout. "Dubai Maritime City will stand as a model that other cities around the world should follow," said Dr. Pachauri.
