Government Spending in the Gulf

The Economist compares oil revenues of today in Gulf countries with the 1970s. A number of large projects aimed at drawing attention and growing the economy are underway in Saudi Arabia. Some of the interesting alternative ideas about how to spend the windfall of oil revenue include paying dividends to citizens (similar to what Alaska does with oil revenues) and investing in stability in Iraq and the broader Middle East.

The article is peppered with generalizations about the Gulf states, which were sort of confusing given the differences between countries in the region.
